THE IMPORTANCE OF JOINING A COMMUNITY

“Our unity is our strength, and our diversity is our power.” Looking at the words of the newly-elected Vice President of the United States, and one of the most inspiring women, carrying the banner of unity and change, Kamala Harris, and countless Sociological studies available to us, it is undeniable that we, as human beings, are innately social and are deeply molded by our linkages.

Feeling socially-connected and understanding the unerring role of our social nature in our happiness and success in life is more important now than ever. However, the complexity and vagueness of the words “Community” and “Commitment” often limit us in our understanding of its importance in our everyday life.

To be able to fully recognize that social connection is vital for any life form, let’s take a closer look at the definition of Community and Commitment.

A CLOSER LOOK ON COMMUNITY AND COMMITMENT

COMMUNITY

In its simplest form, a Community is interpreted as a collection of people occupying a certain place or having a particular characteristic in common. In other words, it is a social unit with plebeians such as identity, customs, values, religions, and locations.

The definition of the term community is fairly forthright and simple but somehow vague and exhausting. It tends to be overused with its deeper meaning overlooked, worst lost. To counter this, we should not define the community only as a place or an idea for it is bigger than that.

We should attach the human-relationship that it actually stands for and define Community as an assembly of people who care about each other and one where the sense of belongingness is consistently validated and sustained.

COMMITMENT

Commitment is classically defined as the condition or state of being dedicated or devoted to a cause, activity, or a relationship. Others also interpret it as an engagement that restricts freedom of action.

With the changing of times, it is just proper to have an updated definition of the word commitment. It should not only be limited to the action, but should also encompass the value that comes with it.

Commitment is often viewed subjectively, but in totality, it is about trust, love, and devotion even when things get tough. It is the backbone of a group or an organization and serves as a foundation and gives the group the strength it needs.

Being part of a community is very important because it serves as our anchor in the tides of uncertainties. The following benefits of joining a community shouldn’t be overlooked:

THE IMPORTANCE OF JOINING A COMMUNITY

OUR COMMUNITY GIVES US A SENSE OF BELONGINGNESS – A sense of belonging is a human necessity, just like our need for food and shelter. Knowing that we belong is vital in realizing the value of our lives and in coping with intense emotions. Belonging pertains to the feeling of acceptance and recognition.

OUR COMMUNITY HELPS SHAPE OUR IDENTITY – Beyond simply being a physical place, it is what happens in it, the experiences that the settlers share, both negative or positive, that start shaping our shared and unique forms of identity. It is in our community where we first find out who we are and what our purpose in life is.

OUR COMMUNITY SERVES AS OUR MOTIVATION AND INSPIRATION – Whether it be a small or a vast community we belong in, it is undeniable that by sharing the same mindset and priorities with our community members, we are able to work more inspired and motivated. This allows us to effectively allocate resources, evaluate performance, and uplift each other. Partnership fosters a sense of communal ownership and collective responsibility, from which collateral success emerges.

TAKEAWAY:

In these uncertain times, it is vital for us social beings to be part of a community. The beauty of being part of a community is that it provides a safe space for us to be vulnerable, one where we can share our thoughts and opinions and not be judged blindly, while enhancing the force that binds us, humans, together.

A community, in its simple yet encompassing definition, is a group of individuals joined by a shared value system: The love for one another, with that love comes understanding, appreciation, support, and trust.

We should always remember that our social connections impact our overall health and well-being. Being part of a community requires our time and effort. Forming strong and healthy relationships with others means opening up, showing respect and care, actively listening, and being open and willing to accept the fact that relationships can change the course of our lives.

However, the functions of a community cannot be accessed without putting commitment, the backbone of any organization, at the center. A committed community is what we should strive for. It is a given that we are all born as unique individuals, but for our community to work, we should all play our vital role in our linkages, and always remember that community is about the “we” not only “me.”
